The Business Of Being in A Band - Part 2 - Basic Investments

You got the basic talents and the hunger to go out and perform (or practice)
So now we'll talk about basic investments
Your instrument
Most beginners fall into the worst trap of not investing in quality instruments, they go for price instead of quality which usually leads to a horrible sounding instrument.
I made this mistake a couple of times.
If you want cheap instruments there are always pawn shops or cheap instrument places to go and buy em. You can also go online and buy it second hand from a previous owner.
Go out of your way to save enough money for a good guitar or intrument
Since I'm a guitarist I'm gonna be more prone to talking about guitars a lot
If you want a cheap guitar go for Ibanez guitars they're cheap and sound really good
I have an Ibanez GAX which sounds extremely well even when it's played alongside a Fender (which I also have, a Squier) or a Les Paul (I got the Ace Frehley model). SO you see I invested quite a lot in my instruments.
A nice sounding instrument will also make your audience appreciate you more. A horrible sounding one will just send them packing.
Next, a good amplifier. If it's just for practice you can go for the basic 10 Watts or 20 Watts amplifier since you won't be cranking it out too loud anyway. Especially if you've got neighbors. So you might also wanna invest in headphones to really keep the sound down and only to yourself.
Third, stomp boxes. As a guitarist, there are 3 essential gadgets. First would be an overdrive/distortion. I prefer the overdrive since it's more warm to the ears and not as noisy as a distortion pedal (this only applies if you're more into blues, distortion's the way to go for heavy metal! I have both too hehehe). Next would be a chorus pedal and last would be a delay unit. These are just suggestions though and you are free to go look at other stompboxes and choose which one to get. The best stompboxes are those from Zoom, Digitech and Ibanez.
Cables, what use is it to hav all these toys and not be able to connect them eh? Invest in Cables from Planet wave or Surelock. They last a long time even if you abuse them a lot. But of course I wouldn't advise you to do so. Always coil them after you use them.
Metronome, investing in a metronome will make your rhythm much more precise. Music is all about rhythm, melody and tone.
Tuner - A very important gadget for your gig bag. It can be digital or wind blown. or a tuning fork wll also do. Can't play musi if you're not in tune.
So for guitarists... there you go. This is what you need.

AcidRadio 16 years of music and change
endofvid [starttext] Can't believe it's been 16 years since I started my own band.
AcidRadio is 16 years old today.
What started out as a joke amongst 4 friends has turned into a full fledged band.
And we're still playing in clubs today.
I'm actually on my way out to play tonight at Cubao Expo. We play every tuesday in Genre Bar to a select group of people who have a yearning for rockin and rollin
hahaha
When the band started out in 1994 I was the bassist. I had 2 excellent guitarists who partied as hard as I did and we didn't care as long as we got to drink and play. We were 15 years old then. Dominic (my best friend) and Leander have since moved on to other things.
Then somewhere along the way we shifted instruments and Leander who used to be the lead guitars/vocals became lead guitars/backup vocals and Dominic shifted from Lead guitars to Bass leaving me to handle front man duties. The shift happened in 2001. It took 7 years for us to realize what we wanted plus we had to put the band in the backburner to finish college.
In 2003 we made the move to come to Manila and I had my drummer with me. Dominic got left behind to finish some stuff and made the move a few months later. Kym (drummer) and I had a revolving roster of bassists and guitarists to fill in the void left by Dominic and Leander.
Heck, we even stayed as a 3 piece until we finally decided to get someone to fill in the lead guitar position.
We played in the dirtiest dives and the most raucous crowds to the mundane birthday parties.
Through the years it was Kym, Dominic and I keeping the band together till we finally got Kino, Kym's younger brother to fill in lead.
That line up was good from 2006 to present.
Throughout the years our hard partying ways waned and we became more responsible (i guess)
Dominic and Kym married incredible women and have great kids. Dominic moved to Thailand.
So many changes. Which prompted me to get Dave ( my sister's ex-boyfriend) to fill in the bass position.
We're basically a tight knit group.
Kino got replaced by Jean Paul just this April cause we needed him to rest a bit from being in a band and get his priorities straight.

It's called: "Your band."
This feature is actually for kids who are either starting a band or are in a band. It can also cater to more mature musicians. It's a lofty ambition but hey... I gotta start teaching right?
Let's just hope I'm ot too scatter brained for this
So you wanna start a band? Hmmm
You got the basic skills, some willing friends and an idea. That's actually enough to start your long journey towards being in the music business.
What some guys fail to do is have a common goal. It can be getting girls or getting drunk but that type of goal usually dies in the long run.
Try to get your band together and think of what would really make you guys stick together in the long run. Is it frienship? Music? Family?
It can be a lot of reasons but you have to think as a group however corny that may sound.
So some basic steps for now
1. Talk about interests and find a common goal
2. Set a rigid practice session every week and no one is allowed to be late or absent
3. Search for gigs - nothing compares to the real thing - you may suck now but as time goes on you'll realize that sucking only lasts a couple of seconds (unless it's recorded on video hahah)
Remember: find the common goal
